The first week of the year, was really hard, had problems with my stomach, many of the guys from the gym had the same problem. Training was hard, I had no energi, but that is way is it good that we are a big group that is training together with the same goals, it is much easier to motivate youself, when you are not alone. The last training of the week, saturday was a killer as always. I was completely done after that. Situation sparring from bad positions, 5 min rounds in groups of 4 people. Got tapped, a foot in my mouth, a kick in the balls, but when we were done it felt good. You over come yourself. Two hours of training and sunday I had to get up early to go to a competition with the young guys, but it was worth it. They did a really good job. 3 guys and 4 medals, I was really happy, it is nice to see them in action, making the tings that we train at the gym work in competitions. 2012 first 4 medals and many more to come.

Back from sickness and new years
It always sucks coming back from sickness, body dont feel right, you get out of breath really fast. But it was good training again. I did not train as much as the other weeks because of New Years, but I think that it was good for the body.
From the 26th to the 31th of january I only did two BJJ sparring sessions. I did not do any physical training that week. I had a really nice New Years eve with some of my best friends, we made some nice food.
Looking at the videos of my sparring, really helps me alot. I can see what I did wrong in the sessions. I would be best if I had some one, controlling the camera, but that is not the case, so sometimes we roll out of the frame.
I will write more about my training last week tomorrow, now it is time for rest.
Jiu Jitsu from the side lines
Last week I did not do that much training. I only did sparring two days, I got a little sick, just a little cold, nothing seriouse, but wanted to stop it before it got worse and did not want any of the other guys to get it. I only filmed one of the sparring sessions. I also did a weight training session with Jeppe how also works in the academy. We did a max test en bench press, I have not done that since I was something like 19 or 20 years old, and have only done weight training two times a week for the last months. My max was 120 kg one time, I think that it is pretty good.
The first three days of this week I have been out as well, but I hope that next week will be much better. I already feel much better, tomorrow will be my first training. It is going to be good to be back to training, it is never easy to be one the side lines, looking at the other guys training.
New belts at the academy
Last night we had a belt ceremony at the academy. Every year right before Christmas we give out new belts, it is a great way to finish the year. This year was the biggest belt ceremony so far. I gave out 8 new blue belts, usually it is something like 2-3 new belts, but as we grow bigger, ofcause more people will get new belts.
It was great to give out the new belts, it is nice to see the new generations moving up the ranks and it is a great Christmas present.
We had a fantastic year, with a lot of new students, great results in the big competitions aswell as the small ones. We got our first medal at the ADCC, Ida Hansson got bronze.
We already have three people qualified for the Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu Jitsu 2012. We won 5 medals at the mundials, 7 at the European Open BJJ, 4 at the Brasileros and two at the Pan Jiu Jitsu. The total amount of medals was 174, the best result so far.
And I just know that 2012 will be even better.
End of the week
One more week of hard training. I was really happy when saturdays two hours of training was over. Saturday is always the hardest session of the week, two hours of drilling and sparring, almost non stop. A lot of peope showed up for the class, great training, I was completely wasted after that. Forgot to tape it again, so I only have videos of the day time sparring.
This weeks result was 14 sessions of training. Really tired, but over all I feel good. I had some good and bad days this week, not all of my sparring was that good, but that is the way you learn. Some times you ‘re the hammer, some time you’re the nail. When its your tourn to be the nail, you just have to take it. It just important that you turn it into something positive, so you learn from it. And dont forget everybody taps, it is just a matter of getting really tired, then you will make mistakes. But that is what I like about Jiu Jitsu.
This is the videos of wednesday to friday.
Midweek update

Three days down, three to go, so fare I feel good, but really tired. I was to tired to train technique today. So only did the sparring this morning. Monday and tuesday I did 3 sessions of training, today I only did two session. Tomorrow I will be back to three.
Hurt my fingers today in sparring, not bad, but a little. I could feel it when I had to teach the class at 17.00. Just know that they will feel good tomorrow 🙂
I’m starting to wake up in the middel of the night, around 4-5 o’clock in the morning, and I wake up like I’m really fresh, not sure if that is a good thing. I think that it is because that I’m training hard. Usually in dont wake up in the night.

15 sessions of training this week and I still feel good, tired but good
It has been a great week, lots of good training, this year we have a great team going down to Lisabon, everybody is going hard at it in training. Monday I was a little off, I just came back from my vacation, where I got some stomach problems, I could still feel it in the first training, I had to sit out after the first sparring, I felt really sick, but the rest of the week was fine, I could still feel it but nothing like that.
I try to film all my sparring sessions, I forgot all about it saturday at the training and I have only filmed the sparring in the morning. I forget about it when I start to teach the class at night.
This week I have tryed to stay on top at work on my passing game, it is a really good tool to film and look at yourself, when you sparre. If you have to opportunity to do so, then DO IT!.
On vacation
Just came back from vacation for the first time in a long while. It has been at least five years, since I have been out travelling, without it being work related or something to do with BJJ. Tomorrow it we start again, it was really good for the body to relax, get some sun, eat and sleep. I ran the 10K Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa. It was a great experience. I can highly recommend it, it is in 3000 m latitude, so dont start out to hard. Came in about an hour after the pros.
Here is some video from my last training before I left for Africa. Fixed the address in the videos.
Swedish Open 2011
Last weekend the biggest BJJ competition in scandinavia was held in Stenungsund, Sweden. Usually we go there as a big team, but this year we only had 9 fighters competing. I think that it was because there has been a lot of competitions right next to each other. For this competition we worked on fixing some of the tactical mistakes that people did at the SOBJJ and the Danish Team & Beginners Competition, people were giving to many points away in the fights and sometimes loosing fights that they could have won. So we did some simple ajustments, that made a big difference. We got a total of 6 gold and one bronze medal. This is the first time in the competitions history that we did not place in the top 3 academies. I don’t see that as a problem, it was just because we did not have that many people competing this time, next year we will go in full force again. I was working as a referee so did not have the chance to coach our fighters, but I have seen all the fights afterwards on video. There are still a lot to work on. The next big challenge is the Europeans in Portugal. I think that these last competitions have shown me many things that we need to work on for the European Open, not just the students but also for myself and my training partners.
This week have been a little slow with the training, I caught cold at the competition, it always the same thing. I always get a little sick when we stay a whole weekend in a gymnasium in the winter. Training saturday was really good, only sparring for 1.5 hours. Hurt my wrist when slow rolling with one of the guys. He turned his hip and landed on my bend wrist. It hurt like hell, but today it seems a lot better. I give it a test tomorrow.
I filmed almost all my sparring sessions on saturday, you can see them all in the playlist below. When I roll now I try to stay active on the buttom and really tight on the top. I will use video to improve my game for the eurpeans.
And I just saw that I put ThatsHowIRoll.com and not dot biz 🙂
Second Danish Team and beginners competition 2011
Last weekend we hosted the second danish team and beginners competition in a city close to Copenhagen, called Hillerød. It is a really nice event, I like the team event especially, because it builds a great feelling of team sprite, it is almost like a football match. CheckMat did great, we won the team cometition. The only problem was, that this year the danish BJJ community did not support the event, so in the end it was only two teams in +76.0 kg white belts. CheckMat won 5 out of 7 posible fights. But I talked with some of the team leaders and they told me that next year, they will.
For the competition I made a new site with a new way to sign up for the competition, you have to make a profile and then sign up, this in it self is not something new, but for every competition, you have to log in, with the same profile. This way you can see all your fight history, all the brackets that you fought in and how far you got in them. This was the first competition where we filmed all the fights and uploade them to youtube and updated the brackets with the videos. So if you go to the Danish Open BJJ site at http://danishopenbjj.dk/ you will be able to see all the brackets and videos of the fights, a really nice feature. You can also see the estimated fight time of the backet and so on. I think that it is cool, and in the future it will have much more information in the site.
I was making a little highlight from the competition and when I was editing the video I was looking at the fights of our students and I really happy to see that many of the techniques that we have been teaching the for the last few months, being applied in the fights. Sweeps, passing the guard, submissions and so on. Fantastic, this makes me really happy as a coach.
CheckMat warriors
My own training has not been that steady these last two weeks, just one time a day. The video from the competition took a lot longer to make and upload then I thought, but I think it was worth it. But from next week I will start to train again. The europeans are coming up, really looking forward to it, the training, the trip with all the guys and the fighting. Just not the dieting.
So in the next bloggs I will be telling you about my preparations for the europeans, so keep coming back 🙂
